Mt Maria College Mitchelton is a welcoming Catholic secondary school committed to providing a safe, engaging and supportive learning environment. We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to support our Science faculty through the effective preparation, organisation and management of laboratory resources and spaces.

This role is vital to the smooth operation of practical science lessons and contributes directly to student learning and safety.

About the Role

The Laboratory Technician works closely with teaching staff to prepare and maintain laboratories, equipment and materials, ensuring practical lessons can be delivered safely and efficiently. The role also supports compliance with workplace health and safety requirements and assists with stock control and ordering.

This position would suit someone who is organised, safety‑focused and enjoys working as part of a collaborative school community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare laboratory equipment, materials and chemical solutions for practical classes
  • Maintain laboratories in a clean, safe and organised condition
  • Assist with the safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous substances
  • Maintain equipment inventories and support ordering of consumables and resources
  • Support staff with risk assessments, safety documentation and safe work procedures
  • Assist with minor equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Support Science staff during practical activities as required
  • Ensure compliance with WHS, chemical management and College procedures

About You

  • Experience working in a laboratory, school or science‑related environment (desirable)
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and chemical handling requirements
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with teaching and support staff
  • Good communication skills and a supportive, service‑focused approach
  • Competency in basic administrative tasks and digital systems (e.g. ordering platforms, record keeping)

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Relevant qualification or experience in laboratory work, science support or a related field (desirable)
  • Current Paid Employee Blue Card (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement)
  • Eligibility to work in Australia
  • Commitment to supporting the ethos and values of a Catholic school community
