Since 1883 Gardeners Road Public School has provided excellence in education to the students in the surrounding communities. The current enrolment is 428 students with approximately 55% from a non-English speaking background and 5% identifying as Aboriginal. Despite the low number of Aboriginal students, the school has a Cultural Resident program to develop our students' understanding of culture, people and country. A great strength of the school is the inclusive learning community comprised of teachers and parents who work together for the benefit of all students. There is a strong focus in literacy and numeracy with our core integrated programs focusing on explicit and differentiated teaching strategies with specialised support to meet students' needs. The school provides creative and performing arts opportunities with all sporting endeavours being encouraged and providing a variety of pathways for every student's potential skill level to be achieved. A valued component of our school is the highly regarded Support Unit comprising seven classes. Caring and expert staff provide individual programs to meet the needs of students with a range of disabilities, where true integration takes place supporting both mainstream and support class students.
The advertised position will be for a classroom teacher role (Monday - Thursday) for Week 1 - 4 on the Mild Intellectual Disability (IM) class in the Support Unit at Gardeners Road Public School. The support class services students from years 3-6 with a primary need of mild intellectual disability who may have secondary diagnoses such as Autism, ADHD and anxiety. The applicant will demonstrates a willingness to manage challenging behaviours, make adjustments for learners with special needs and work closely with a collaborative team. The class has the support of a full time SLSO and is taught 1 day/week by the Assistant Principal who will be available for support, collaboration and planning.
