Callaghan College Wallsend Campus is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our Support Unit.

The successful applicant will teach students in Years 7–10 with a range of disabilities and additional learning needs. Experience in managing challenging behaviours, implementing positive behaviour support strategies and using de-escalation techniques is essential.

Key Role Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver differentiated teaching and learning programs, including Life Skills curriculum.

• Effectively manage challenging behaviours and implement positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.

• Develop and implement Personalised Learning and Support Plans (PLSPs), Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) and Safety Risk Management Plans (SRMPs).

• Work collaboratively with teachers, SLSOs, families and external support services.

• Support students' academic, social, emotional and independent living skills.

• Maintain accurate assessment, reporting and student documentation.

• Promote a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated experience teaching students with disabilities and complex learning and behavioural needs.

2. Proven ability to manage challenging behaviours using positive behaviour support and effective de-escalation strategies.

3. Ability to plan, differentiate and deliver engaging teaching and learning programs that meet individual student needs.

4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
