Job Summary

We require a full-time temporary Head Teacher Support beginning 20th April 2026 to 18 December 2026, with the possibility of extension.

Teaching load: 27 periods per fortnight, 18 period HT allowance.

Total Annual Remuneration Package: valued at $168,946.00 per year. This position attracts an annual base salary of $149,059.00, plus leave loading and employer's contribution to superannuation.

Denison College of Secondary Education – Kelso High Campus is a comprehensive Year 7 - 12 secondary school located in Bathurst NSW. As part of the innovative Denison College structure, Kelso High Campus collaborates with its partner, Bathurst High Campus, providing students and staff with diverse opportunities for personal growth and academic success. This partnership supports a broad, shared curriculum for Years 9 to 12, ensuring a consistent and varied educational experience.

With an enrolment of approximately 800 students, including 18% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, 1.5% students with English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D), and 51% students with identified disabilities, the campus offers tailored support through differentiated teaching practices. A well-resourced support unit, comprising 10 dedicated classes, caters to significant student needs, supporting 80 students directly, alongside an additional 36 students in mainstream classes receiving Integrated Funding Support.

Role outline:

The Head Teacher Support is a strategic and operational leader and a key member of the campus executive leadership team. Working collaboratively with the Head Teacher Support (ACIP), and in close partnership with the Deputy Principal Inclusion Support and Campus Principal, the role has a primary focus on leading high-quality teaching and learning and building the capacity of classroom teachers.

The Head Teacher Support demonstrates highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, leading in a respectful, collegial, and impactful manner. As a leader and co-learner, they engage in collaborative inquiry to strengthen professional knowledge and practice, while engaging, inspiring, and motivating others to achieve sustained improvement.

This campus-based role aligns with the Department’s Middle Leadership role description, with a particular emphasis on:

  • Leading teaching and learning
  • Developing self and others

There is flexibility within the role for negotiation around implementation, including the establishment of priorities, processes, supervision arrangements, and associated duties and responsibilities.

Key aspects of the role include:

Build and develop collaborative teams grounded in strong relational trust, shared purpose, and collective responsibility.

Instructional leadership: support teacher development through targeted coaching and mentoring to recognise, model, and lead exemplary classroom practice that builds students’ knowledge, understanding, and skills.

Lead evaluation and review processes for teaching and learning programs, registers, and work samples, analysing the impact of instructional strategies to inform ongoing improvement.

Communication: initiate and sustain processes that foster collaborative relationships with executive, teaching, and non-teaching staff, enabling responsive, respectful professional dialogue and shared accountability for student learning.

Community connection: establish respectful, positive partnerships with parents/carers and community members to strengthen links between student wellbeing, learning, and achievement, and to enhance engagement and support.

Student wellbeing, support, and monitoring: lead proactive and responsive approaches to student wellbeing, ensuring effective monitoring, intervention, and support.

Selection Criteria:

The successful applicant must have NSW Department of Education approval to teach in NSW public schools. They must also be willing to teach students with mild intellectual disability; emotional disturbance; behaviour difficulties; autism. 

The selection process involves:

  • submission of a current resume, including contact details for two school-based referees who are familiar with, and able to discuss, your abilities and suitability for this position. One of your referees must be your current/most recent supervisor;
  • submission of a written application (expression of interest) addressing the specific selection criteria below (approximately two pages)
  • verbal referee reports, and
  • an informal interview if required

Specific Selection Criteria:

Expressions of interest are to be approximately two A4 pages, addressing the following criteria:

  1. Strong educational leadership skills and experience to support the implementation of evidence-based whole-school initiatives that improve student learning, engagement, and wellbeing.
  2.  Proven ability to work effectively with students and families with diverse and complex needs, building positive, collaborative relationships that support student learning, wellbeing, and achievement.
  3.  Demonstrated capacity as a visible and collaborative leader who guides, mentors, and builds the confidence and skills of middle leaders, promoting shared responsibility for improving teaching and learning.
  4. Highly effective communication, organisation, and time-management skills to lead the day-to-day operations of the school and to maintain and strengthen a positive and inclusive school culture for staff, students, and families.
