Yandelora School is a newly established school. The school opened in January 2019. The school meets the needs of students with moderate and severe intellectual and physical disability, Autism, challenging behaviours and sensory impairment.
The school opened with 50 students from Kindergarten to Year 11 in 2019. By the end of the year the decision was made to open up the rest of the school, adding another 50 enrolments to the school based on evidence of the need in the community for educational opportunities for students with moderate and severe intellectual and physical disabilities, mental health and challenging behaviour.
The school is located across the road from a mainstream primary school which opens up opportunity for integration activities, and close to a major shopping centre that enables good access for life skills programs.
In 2020 we had our first Year 12 leavers, with 3 students obtaining their HSC in Life Skills, celebrating with a school farewell dinner.
Yandelora school is recognised for its commitment to providing high-quality education for learners with complex needs.
Our authentic situational analysis has underpinned this strategic plan and has been created in consultation with stakeholders within our community.
The school is one of 5 schools involved in a school improvement trial that has its grounding in a standards based framework. This framework identifies key pillars for our school and then investigates, reviews and validates their embedded status in all aspects of our school life. Our three performance pillars focus on the areas of teaching and learning, giving our students a voice and authentic student engagement in learning. These pillars drive our school improvement journey.
Yandelora means "Meeting Place, a place of Peace amongst the people" and relates to a local area called Lake Yandel'ora. The place is where the tribal elders along the eastern seaboard would travel to meet, to end disputes, to organise trade and marriages. The name was given to the school to acknowledge this very special area. The school emblem is the tail feather of the Lyrebird. The lyrebird is the totem animal of the Dharawal People. The Lyrebird is a gifted mimic and is able to mimic sounds and noises of other animals. At Yandelora School we like to use every students unique voice to support them in their communication, so, like the Lyrebird we try to learn the voice or communication system of every student who attends our school.
Yandelora School is quickly being recognised in the local community with many small business and community groups offering their support.
