Our Department of Education School is partnered with the Stewart House Charity and provides a 12 night stay for students from Year 2 – 8 from all over NSW and ACT NSW Public Schools. Students are nominated for a variety of reasons, some of which are a lack of opportunity, rural settings, trauma backgrounds and challenges relating to disabilities.
At Stewart House School, each class embark on exciting excursions around Sydney every second day. These include visits to Taronga Zoo, the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, Madame Tussauds, the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium and bowling. When the weather permits, our teachers take their classes to the beach for a swim in the beautiful ocean pool at South Curl Curl, providing an additional opportunity for relaxation and connection with nature.
In school days consist of our core lessons in self awareness, communication and emotional regulation and additional activities such as pizza making, woodart, pottery and opportunities to use the social skills learned in class.
Each class has a teacher and a School Learning Support Officer and while a bus licence ( Light Rigid ) is not a requirement to work as a casual at Stewart House School, it can also be a bonus.
Our teachers and SLSOs work hard to build relationships quickly with students and use a variety of strategies to support them during their stay. We would hope our casual staff have similar skills and a flexible mindset whether they are here for an individual day or for long teaching blocks.
